Play Area Under the Stairs

When we moved into our house, we found that the previous owners had left us a tiny door in the attic. Someone had a fun project planned that never came to fruition. As soon as we discovered it, I knew we had to find a way to use it. I have always loved the idea of hidden play areas and secret worlds. I blame the The Chronicles of Narnia for my obsession.

Supplies:

Step one was to find a place to put our new door. We had stairs in the middle of the house that seemed like they should have space underneath. The spaces under stairs usually seemed to be underutilized. There was already a closet adjacent to the space that seemed like a perfect place to hide a secret door.

What better way to find out than to start exploring. I drilled a small hole first, to be sure there weren’t any wires or pipes that I would cut into. After exploring with a flashlight, I expanded the cutout with our oscillating tool.

We found plenty of space for a play area!

After cleaning out the space, we put up some lights and the girls got work painting while I installed the door.

I used some leftover fiberboard we had from a previous project to dress it up a bit. I was going for a Beetlejuice effect with that top piece.

Now for some carpet and some seating.

We hung coats in the closet and hid the door as much as we could. Now the kids have a secret place to play that’s all their own.
